Walnut

Grain: Grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. Has a medium texture and moderate natural luster.
General Appearance: Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white.
Density & Durability: 4/5 - With most solid woods the durability is generally high because they can always be repaired if damaged. Walnut is quite dense and durable but there are options which outperform it.

Walnut with danish oil

Walnut Treated With Danish Oil

Application: Rub on
Details: Danish Oil wood finish is an all natural, hand rubbed wood finish designed to beautify and protect all types of interior wood working. This finish is porous and can repeal liquids but will stain if left wet.
Care: Danish Oil requires care during use and maintenance over its lifetime. The good thing is that you can cary out spot repairs by sanding and oiling specific locations.

Walnut treated with Osmo Wood Wax 3025

Walnut Treated With Osmo Wood Wax 3025

Application: Rub on
Details: The finish is a hard wax-oil finish that penetrates into the wood and forms a breathable, hard surface. Liquids will bead up on the surface and can be wiped up without leaving a mark. It creates a microporous breathable finish that will not crack, flake or peal.
Care: Wood Wax is a robust finish which requires less care daily than Danish Oil because of the hard wax surface. Because of this, the long term maintenance is a bit more complicated, having to sand and refinish entire surfaces. The wax can allow for scratches to appear more easily on the surface.

Walnut treated wit polyurethane

Walnut Treated With Polyurethane

Application: Rub on
Details: Polyurethane is a synthetic resin in which the polymer units are linked by urethane groups, used chiefly as constituents of paints, varnishes, adhesives, and foams.
Care: Polyurethane is extremely robust and does not require any special day to day care. Where it falls short is over a long lifespan. If it scratches allowing water to penetrate below the finish it may begin to flake or chip. At that point the entire surface or piece will need to be professionally sanded down to the bare wood and resprayed. UV can also break down the finish over time leading it to flake.

Walnut treated wit polyurethane spray

Walnut Treated With Polyurethane Spray

Application: Spray
Details: A spray lacquer is a a liquid made of synthetic substances, that dries to form a hard protective coating for the wood. This finish is very robust. Once dried the surface is impenetrable by water. It does not leave a breathable surface like wax or oil.

White Oak

Grain: Grain is straight, with a coarse, uneven texture. The grain is also porous.
General Appearance: Heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with an olive cast. Nearly white to light brown sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Quartersawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns.
Density & Durability: 5/5 - With most solid woods the durability is generally high because they can always be repaired if damaged. White Oak is very dense and durable. The one place it lacks is in the porosity of the grain, allowing water to penetrate if not protected well.

White Oak with danish oil

Ash

Grain: Has a medium to coarse texture similar to oak. The grain is almost always straight and regular.
General Appearance: The heartwood is a light to medium brown color. Sapwood can be very wide, and tends to be a beige or light brown; not always clearly or sharply demarcated from heartwood.
Density & Durability: 5/5 - With most solid woods the durability is generally high because they can always be repaired if damaged. Ash is very dense and durable.

Ash Polyurethane Spray

Ash Bleached

Application: Pre finish bath
Details: Bleaching is a liquid wood bleach system that will remove the natural colour pigment from bare wood. The bleaching process is not a finish but rather a process carried out as an additional step before finishing.
Care: Since the bleaching process itself is not a finish, there is no day to day care involved, but it is important to note that if the finish applied on top of it requires maintenance and that maintenance involves sanding, it is possible to sand through the beached wood and down to the original pigment.
this could lead to requiring a complete refinish of the piece in it's entirety.

Alder

Grain: Grain is generally straight, with a moderately fine, uniform texture.
General Appearance: Alder tends to be a light tan to reddish brown; color darkens and reddens with age. There is no visible distinction between heartwood and sapwood. Large aggregate rays appear as occasional small streaks on the face grain that can be mistaken for defects in the wood.
Density & Durability: 2/5 - Alder is fairly soft making it susceptible to damage. The grain is very tight keeping it safe from water penetration.

General Appearance: There are many options when it comes to plastic laminate. Colour, screen and texture are all variables.
Density & Durability: 5/5 - Laminate is extremely robust. Since it is plastic, it is completely water resistant

Laminate

Plastic Laminate

Application: Contact Cement
Details: Hard durable plastic laminate used for countertops, cupboard doors, and other surfaces. This product is applied to a substrate often MDF. Once applied a PVC edge banding is applied to hide the core. The end result is an extremely robust water safe product that lasts for a very long time.
Care: Laminates are extremely easy to care for. They can withstand wet, hot, and even corrosive abuse.
